Road to Success: Free Truck Driving Program Helps Manitobans Start New Careers

The Manitoba Trucking Association (MTA), in partnership with The Northpine Foundation, is providing an incredible opportunity for 90 eligible residents in Winnipeg. Through the Road to Success: Class 1 Training Pilot Program, participants can receive free training to pursue a career in truck driving, a sector currently experiencing high demand.

Empowering Manitobans Through Free Training

The program aims to support individuals facing financial or logistical barriers to entering the workforce. With fully covered training costs, successful applicants will have no out-of-pocket expenses and will gain direct access to employers eager to hire skilled drivers.

Jessica Cranmer, MTA’s Sector Council Program Manager, emphasized the significance of the initiative: “This program is more than just a pathway to employment it’s a chance to change lives, meet the growing demand for truck drivers, and strengthen our community’s workforce. For employers, it’s an opportunity to invest in talent that will drive their business forward.”

 Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of Winnipeg.
  • Currently receive employment and income assistance or earn less than $35,000 annually.

Partnering with Local Driving Schools

Four accredited driving schools will deliver the training to participants, including Arnold Bros. Transportation Academy, First Class Training Centre, Professional Driver Training School, and United Transportation Driver Training. These institutions have been chosen to ensure high-quality instruction and a clear path to certification for future truck drivers.

Support for the Workforce and the Community

Naomi Gichungu, Impact Director at The Northpine Foundation, highlighted the organization’s focus on creating employment opportunities for those on social assistance or precariously employed: “Northpine’s investments in Winnipeg prioritize gainful employment opportunities for people on social assistance and those who are precariously employed. We are pleased to support the trucking sector in bringing in new workforce into the industry.”

A Bright Future for Graduates

Graduates of the program will find themselves well-positioned in a growing industry, with direct access to employers looking for trained, job-ready drivers. The trucking sector continues to face a shortage of skilled workers, and this initiative is expected to provide a significant boost to the local workforce.
