New federal hub connects ZEV information

With the introduction of an online portal that links to information regarding zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), Natural Resources Canada has consolidated information that was previously dispersed across several government websites.

The central website provides access to information on a variety of topics, from the fundamentals of charging to the $200,000 in federal incentives available through the Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles Program and improved first-year capital cost allowances on qualified ZEVs.

The general advice for commercial vehicles makes mention of items like the necessity to compare daily vehicle use to operational needs, create infrastructure plans, and involve staff members and senior management early in the decision-making process.

"The environment and the economy go hand in hand," declared Julie Dabrusin, parliamentary assistant to the ministers of natural resources and environment and climate change, during remarks at the EV & Charging Expo in Toronto.

According to her, Canada is currently ranked as the second-best country in the world for investments in clean technologies and is "bending the curve" to bring greenhouse gas emissions down to pre-pandemic levels. "Of course, we anticipated a decline in the numbers during the course of the pandemic, but now we're revealing that we've also fallen below pre-pandemic levels. Those are structural.

The benefits extend beyond electric automobiles, she continued.

The grid in Canada is among the cleanest in the world. We already have an 84% clean grid and plan to completely phase out coal-fired electricity by 2030.

Along with the portal, Dabrusin also disclosed $5.9 million in funding for programs aimed at raising awareness and educating the public that were carried out by 28 different groups and that mostly focused on passenger cars and environmental health.
