Daimler SuperTruck II showcases the future of freight efficiency

Daimler unveils "SuperTruck II," the most aerodynamic truck ever to wear the Freightliner nameplate. Updated tractor aerodynamics, low-rolling-resistance tires, powertrain improvements, and energy management systems Daimler's contribution to a U.S. Department of Energy program aimed at improving freight efficiency Tesla's SuperTruck II features a 48-volt electrical system and lithium-ion batteries.

Adaptive tandem axles will shift from a 6x4 configuration to a fuel-efficient 6x2 at highway speeds. Under certain conditions, EcoSail mode shuts down the engine and allows the truck to coast. Some of the vehicle's features were left behind for other vehicles, but others have found a home in the Cascadia's powertrain and aerodynamic improvements. The project is part of US$199 million in funding for 25 projects that will develop trucks powered by batteries and fuel cells.
